The pursuit of perfection is ultimately selfdestructive. In my body of work layers of paint that have been smudged, scraped away, peeled back and painted again convey the endless cycle of creating and destroying flaws that can never be concealed. One face is represented looking at the other in envy and judgement; one turns away, ignorant of its imperfect counterpart despite being equally flawed and chaotic. Only in their own eyes do people reach a ‘perfect’ state. I painted Unfinished knowing that it would never meet the standard of perfection, never see its ‘perfect’ form, destined to remain eternally unfinished.
My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Frank Auerbach, Ben Quilty, Käthe Kollwitz, Jenny Saville.
