Budding disillusion

Drawing

Coloured pencil and graphite pencil on paper

My body of work represents disillusionment with traditional authoritarian structures in society. By inverting symbols of religious and government power so that they are merely decorative, vase-like objects, their authority is stripped away and the reality beneath a beautiful façade is uncovered. Vibrant flowers symbolise disenchantment with the failings of authority, and what may grow from the hidden essence of these structures when the ruse of functionality is removed. Buildings, reminiscent of Duchamp’s readymades, are upturned for reinterpretation, and ambiguity guides an emotional response influenced by audience experience. Hence the illusion of power in society is disrupted.

An artistic orange brushstroke design forms abstract shapes on a white background. Overlaid on the design is the word "artexpress" in a sleek, modern black font. The orange brush strokes appear dynamic and free-flowing, with splatters and tapered ends.Simplified waratah flower in deep red colour with the words NSW Government in dark blue stacked underneath.
