Six Studies for Dementia Sufferers at the Base of Isolation

Painting

Acrylic on wood, Perspex, adhesive

Dementia affects many people, including my Grandad whose portrait is included in this series. My body of work studies the isolation felt by people with dementia, and the deterioration in communication it causes. The 'invisible wall' separating the sufferer and those around them is represented in this series by using Perspex. White lines border the sides in a three-dimensional reference to Francis Bacon's cage structures. Bacon is further referenced through appropriation of one of his titles. This series acts as an alternative to communication, when people are no longer capable of articulating their emotions.

An artistic orange brushstroke design forms abstract shapes on a white background. Overlaid on the design is the word "artexpress" in a sleek, modern black font. The orange brush strokes appear dynamic and free-flowing, with splatters and tapered ends.Simplified waratah flower in deep red colour with the words NSW Government in dark blue stacked underneath.
