Progress Over Perfection

Drawing, graphite pencil on paper

My HSC Body of Work is a critique of contemporary society, making comment on the suffocating pressures placed upon young people to achieve 'perfection' in the various arenas of one's life. It explores the endless pursuit of a notion which is paradoxically unachievable, yet continually strived for and idolised. In homage of Leonardo Da Vinci's revered The Last Supper, I aim to represent the adaption and response of fellow young persons to this never-ending pursuit, alongside its ultimate capability to shape one's worldly perceptions and self identity. Leaving each figure ambiguously 'unfinished', my work invites the audience to question the very notion of 'perfection' which in turn has replaced the traditional religious worship of a god with the narcissistic worship of one's self.

An artistic orange brushstroke design forms abstract shapes on a white background. Overlaid on the design is the word "artexpress" in a sleek, modern black font. The orange brush strokes appear dynamic and free-flowing, with splatters and tapered ends.Simplified waratah flower in deep red colour with the words NSW Government in dark blue stacked underneath.
