Primary school students viewing artworks in a gallery during a self-directed school visit, standing around display plinths and closely observing sculptural works.

A self-directed visit offers schools the flexibility to explore Hazelhurst at their own pace, allowing teachers to shape the experience around their students’ interests, learning goals and schedules. Students can engage with exhibitions independently, observe artworks closely, and discuss ideas in small groups, making the visit adaptable and responsive to different learning styles.

Gallery Capacity & Session Planning

A maximum of 50 students and 3 teachers/carers may be in the Hazelhurst Gallery at one time.  If your booking exceeds 50 students, groups must be rotated through the exhibition.

While groups rotate, additional students may use the gardens. We recommend scheduling a break or a self-directed activity that can be completed outdoors. Please note that we do not have internal rooms available for large groups.

We recommend allowing 30 to 45 minutes per gallery session.

Student–Teacher Ratios

For the safety of visitors, students and artworks, we recommend the following supervision ratios:

  • 50 students: 3 teachers/carers
  • 30 students: 2 teachers/carers
  • 20 students: 1 teacher/carer
Please note: All self-directed school visits require advance booking to support safe gallery capacity and program scheduling.

We will be in touch to confirm your booking within 5 business days.
