The Wild Persistence of Uncertainty: 1882, 1931, 2012

Coloured pencil on paper

My body of work explores the necessity of embracing uncertainty as integral to life, regardless of the disruption to optimism this may create in the short-term. Initially fascinated with inner-Melbourne’s colonial and contemporary architecture, and the existential concerns of modernist poetry, I became aware of the amount of instability that must occur for humanity to create a world from which people can derive happiness. In drawing buildings from different historical periods in Albury, using surrealist conventions, I affirm the normality of anxieties inherent in our unstable world, while affirming the importance of reconciling with such uncertainty.

An artistic orange brushstroke design forms abstract shapes on a white background. Overlaid on the design is the word "artexpress" in a sleek, modern black font. The orange brush strokes appear dynamic and free-flowing, with splatters and tapered ends.Simplified waratah flower in deep red colour with the words NSW Government in dark blue stacked underneath.
