The site of Hazelhurst Arts Centre was bequeathed to Sutherland Shire Council in the 1990s by its owners Ben and Hazel Broadhurst, with the instruction that Hazelhurst become a place of culture for the whole community.

In 2000, after extensive community consultation Hazelhurst opened its doors as a public arts facility and includes two gallery spaces, an arts centre and cafe and has become a popular meeting place for visitors from across Southern Sydney and beyond.
