Breakdown

Drawing, watercolour pencil on paper

I wanted to explore the impact of warfare on the human psyche, using material reduction to break down the impact of combat on Private Yo Yavala, a British Afgan War veteran. Via the process of reduction, I aim to clarify the extent of his transformation between civilian and veteran life - thus elucidating the broader danger of military conflict on society as a whole. In a world where we have become embroiled in seemingly endless overseas conflicts, I think it is important to recognize the danger of violence as a catalyst for the destruction of our own humanity. This is what 'Breakdown' aims to achieve.

An artistic orange brushstroke design forms abstract shapes on a white background. Overlaid on the design is the word "artexpress" in a sleek, modern black font. The orange brush strokes appear dynamic and free-flowing, with splatters and tapered ends.Simplified waratah flower in deep red colour with the words NSW Government in dark blue stacked underneath.
