Remember You Must Die (Memento Mori)

Photomedia

Digital colour prints, rag paper

Why are we here? What do we live for? Is the certainty of death worth thinking about? My body of work generates questions about our purpose and sense of fulfilment on Earth, capturing still life objects as symbols of mortality and decay. They evoke the new and the old, past and present, life and death. Contemporary photographs of things that lack substance and depth trivialise our lives. In restoring meaningful subject matter I emphasise the significance of life. Drawing upon the cultural theme of vanitas, I remind us of life’s brevity and fragility, and the inevitability of death: memento mori.

An artistic orange brushstroke design forms abstract shapes on a white background. Overlaid on the design is the word "artexpress" in a sleek, modern black font. The orange brush strokes appear dynamic and free-flowing, with splatters and tapered ends.Simplified waratah flower in deep red colour with the words NSW Government in dark blue stacked underneath.
