My interest in horror as a genre led me to investigate ideas of tension and emptiness in my body of work, Coral Reef Motel. Referencing Mike Nelson’s, The Coral Reef, I developed the visuals for this series by mining a variety of personal photo sharing sites on the internet for artful and intimate moments posted by strangers. Once I had gathered these reference photos, I re-contextualised them to create a tone of suspense and paranoia, uniting the photos into one cohesive collection through painting, the details and colour choices.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Mike Nelson, The Coral Reef; Noel Brewer, A Kubrick scene; Jim Hickcox, Cheap motel sink; Dario Argento (dir), Suspiria; Dom, Motel room Kingman Arizona; Kojima Productions, P.T. [video game]; Dennis Kelly, Utopia [TV series].
