Using traditional techniques such as underpainting, grisailles, chiaroscuro and translucent oil glazing, my intention in my body of work was to synthesize my Western upbringing with my Korean heritage. My work represents the parts of Korea that I recognise as familiar – the intergenerational cultural processes of kimjang, the vibrant jeongja, and the shik jaeryo integral to creating the flavours and textures I eat at the dinner table. These forms of culture have cultivated and instilled in me a pride in being Korean regardless of where I am or live.
My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Kate Oh, Anthony van Dyck.
