IN MY ABSENCE

Painting

Oil and acrylic on canvas

Beds are universal yet deeply personal vessels of temperature and memory. Without fail, they provide solace, welcoming the convoluted mind into rest and introspection. Inspired by the movement of drapery in Greek and Renaissance sculpture, my body of work represents the lingering warmth left by human interaction – a moment in the delicate rhythms of human existence. By illustrating beds in varying temperatures, I investigate the contrast between absence and presence. My intention in focusing on lighting was to make these familiar spaces into places of beauty, inviting the audience into a deeper appreciation of the ordinary and the everyday.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Stephanie Serpick, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Berthe Morisot, Chiharu Shiota, Johannes Vermeer, Timotheus, Michelangelo.
