My body of work investigates the dichotomy of feeling both a sense of belonging and disconnection through diaspora, and the complex cultural identity that results. Born and raised in Australia, my understanding of my Pakistani heritage is fragmented, only supported by family stories, images and brief phone calls to relatives back home. My work conveys this absence of physical connection through indistinct but ordinary Pakistani urban scenes. Ubiquitous powerlines threading across the work represent broken transmissions and communication. My intention in using incomplete stencils of Islamic pattern underneath the street scenes is to suggest that the way ‘home’ is more imagined than lived.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan, Chiharu Shiota.
