DROWNING IN MY ‘SUNBURNT COUNTRY’
Drawing
Coloured pencil on paper
I cannot see her flowers, Nor her scribble mark trees, As her sunburnt earth drowns me, Through ochre plains, dusted breeze. My body of work represents how modern Australia’s constant noise and pressure dull perception, leaving beauty unseen. I used four ochre-red pencils with the intention of building a monochromatic intensity that conveys an overstimulated, homogenised society. The inclusion of my self-portrait within a split sap drawing communicates the fractured self that results. Paradoxically, the detail of fine scratching in each drawing invites audiences to slow down and truly see, giving them an antidote: moments of stillness that reawaken presence.
My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Morten Schelde, Georges Braque, Dorothea Mackellar, Janet Matthews.
