Many of the greatest biblical heroes are women, and my body of work conveys their remarkable stories with the intention of celebrating their merit. I used the women in my life as models to represent these scriptural figures, choosing them for their shared attributes. My personal relationships with the sitters gave me insight into their characters, and I used this understanding in illustrating scripture’s archetypal feminine icons (left to right: Miriam the Prophetess, the Samaritan Woman at the Well, Ruth and Naomi, Rebecca, Esther Queen of Persia). The gold motif, inspired by religious iconography, references traditional depictions of holy figures.
My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Stephanie Rew, Alex J Venezia, Valerie Lin, Daniel Gerhartz.
