Three paintings: a mattress floating on dark water, a busy city street with pixelated distortions, and a blue chair seen through torn plastic under spotlight.

THE COMMUTE

Painting

Oil on canvas

My body of work, The Commute, invites audiences to investigate the complex psyche of an individual fraught with mental health struggles. Inspired by Yayoi Kusama’s use of art as an outlet for her hallucinations and obsessive thoughts, my work examines my own overwhelming desire for perfectionism and control. Using the commute to work as an analogy for the repetitive and seemingly unconquerable nature of mental illness, my work conveys the gradual disillusionment of individuals worn down by their inner battles. In representing a mundane and universal experience, I communicate how mental illness manifests within a person over their lifetime.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Abdul Abdullah, Edvard Munch, Yayoi Kusama.
