HARVESTED – A MORAL DILEMMA

Painting

Oil on canvas

My body of work represents flowers as a symbol for the selfish act of removing living things from their natural environment for aesthetic or personal gain. I chose white flowers to convey the concept of purity. My intention in illustrating the freshly cut flowers in isolation on the table next to sharp instruments was to suggest sinister intentions and question the romanticisation of humanity’s dominance over nature. I invite the audience to see my work as a conflicted space where beauty and possession coexist uncomfortably, and therefore to consider the individual’s role in exploiting the world around them.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Cig Harvey, Felix Dobbert, Albert York.
