MEMORY OF HER STRENGTH (BRAVERY OF YU GWAN SUN)

Drawing

Charcoal

Yu Gwan Sun (유관순) was a brave young woman who is a symbol of resilience in Korea’s fight for independence since 1919. The figure in my body of work represents not only Yu Gwan Sun but also countless others whose identities have faded from memory. Her shadowy presence conveys the fragile, shifting nature of remembrance. My work references traditional Korean culture – Hanbok textiles, Hangul script, the national flag – that she and others fought to protect. My intention is to bridge past and present, reminding us that what was fought for must still be cherished and protected.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Gerhard Richter, Robert Longo.
