CURSIVE CURLICUES
Sculpture
Copper, paint, copper oxidiser
In my body of work, I used traditional and unconventional materials to investigate form and absence. I wove copper, once valued for its function and permanence, into delicate structures with the intention of defining rather than occupying space. The marble base represents copper’s classical, utilitarian history. The wire rises above, conveying renewal and reinterpretation. I shaped the wire by hand and accelerated its aging with verdigris patina, referencing history and decay. I encourage the audience to see the sculptures as if they are floating on their near-invisible Perspex rods, balancing fragility and strength, tradition and transformation, material and void.
My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Ruth Aiko Asawa, Brooke Munro, Bronwyn Oliver.
