Hands Beyond Borders
Drawing
Graphite on paper
There are complex emotions and connections associated with migration. My body of work is a personal narrative of migration from Fiji to Australia. Using plain black and white drawings, I investigated the emotions of this journey. I focused on representing the different hands of my family in a range of positions to convey our spectrum of experiences during various encounters. These hands hold objects that are symbolic of the migration process. The starkness of black and white communicates the contrasts and duality of these symbolic elements. My work’s intention was to illustrate our journey through the power of monochromatic simplicity.
My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Nandy Chan, Phil Javier, MC Escher, Arinze Stanley.
