My body of work is inspired by the energetic buzz of Chinese wet markets. I used to visit these places holding my mother’s hand. Loud conversations, bargaining grandmothers, colourful fruit arrangements and silver fish in trays formed the rich tapestry of community. These markets sell vital staples and are essential cultural institutions for social interactions, culinary traditions and economic activities. However, the coronavirus outbreak placed them under extreme scrutiny. Due to Western views of their ‘unsanitary conditions’ and ‘unsafe environments’ they were shutdowns for prolonged periods, destabilising the community life of market vendors and the connection between people and place.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: James Crandall, Chaim Soutine.
