Innocence and Ignorance

Sculpture

Wool and acrylic yarn, papier-mâché

In my body of work, Innocence and Ignorance, I used my love for crochet to convey my fear of becoming an adult. As the youngest sibling I feel as though I grew up too quickly. The hand closing in on the seated figure communicates my anxieties about the little time I have to appreciate adolescence, while the softness of the yarn represents comfort to dull the sting of what we cannot change. I have mourned the death of my childhood with cramped hands and countless shopping trips. I have never made so many trips to the abundant aisles of Spotlight.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Liisa Hietanen, Alexandria Masse, Yulia Ustinova.
