In the House of Kings: Memories of a Mother
Drawing
Graphite on paper
My body of work investigates the fundamental relationship between one's identity and family and one’s history, culture and lineage. The monochromatic illustrations of archaic symbols, statues and artefacts stand in stark contrast to the coloured objects representing the intimate experiences of my family. My intention in making this contrast is to convey the necessary sanctions placed on the present and existing by the ancient and obsolete. My use of farsi calligraphy references Shirin Neshat, whose works merge dialect and photography. The interview with my mother emphasises the connection between one’s sense of self and one’s upbringing, culture and environment.
My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Shirin Neshat; Kate Murphy, Prayers of a Mother.
