Mortality – Disruption of Life
Painting
Oil on canvas
My body of work is a series of paintings investigating humanity’s destructive tendencies, as well as the impossibility of the world remaining unchanged forever. I convey this idea through the contrast between the large painting, where flowers bloom, fruit is plump and everything is neatly organised, and the small painting, with a rotting papaya, bitten apple and spilt whiskey. My juxtaposition of the same objects in different states represents how detrimental human behaviour is for the environment, animals and one another. I used oil paint on canvas, with underpainting and blending of objects, in reference to the Dutch Golden Age.
My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Valerie Hegarty, Jacob van Walscapelle.
