The Lost Capybara Treasures

Painting

Oil on canvas

The Lost Capybara Treasures appropriates works that were groundbreaking in the artist's time. Each artist was trying something new and their works have resonated across time and place. I chose Monet’s small visible brush strokes, van Gogh’s post-impressionist impasto layers, Delacroix’s romanticism, Fragonard’s rococo style and the Renaissance period of da Vinci, reviving classical, humanist and naturalist styles. Traditional techniques of painting are referenced in my body of work through the use of oils and golden frames of different sizes. The anthropomorphism of the capybara represents contemporary pop culture as, since 2021, the capybara has been a social media phenomenon.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists:  Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, Eugène Delacroix, Jean-Honoré Fragonard.
