No Strings Attached
Painting
Watercolour on paper with cotton strings
No Strings Attached is a reminder and an illustration of how you need to stay true to yourself. My body of work is a series that examines my personal progression towards a sense of self. The red strings represent control and tension and conflict within my sense of self. The fifth piece conveys how I reached a state of acceptance and peace after breaking away from unwanted, outdated and dominating forces that at some stage moulded me into a marionette.
My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: John Singer Sargent, He Jiaying, Lucien Levy-Dhurmer, Maximilian Lenz, Yoshitaka Amano, Justin Mortimer, Edward Hopper, Odilon Redon, Alphonse Osbert, Naeemeh Naeemei, Barry McGlashan, J W Waterhouse, Enes Dirig, Fang Lijun, Essam Marouf.
