Ukiyo; the Stars, Ocean and Herself
Drawing
Graphite pencil
The ocean is often used as a metaphysical representation of our subconscious; the usual reference uses it as a familiar facade with vast inner worlds that are challenging to recognise. Ukiyo refers to the floating world, where one should live in the moment. So, in my body of work, forms of water are represented as cradling one’s spiritual awakening process. Geometric details convey the continuously questioning state of the psyche, and what remains unknown to us. Water both recalls the wonders of childhood and is able to invigorate the mind, freeing it from the calamities of modern struggle.
My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Constance Regardsoe, Calida Rawles, Amanda Cameron, Paul Stowe.
