Julia Flanagan works across painting, drawing and sculpture. The shapes, colours and patterns found in her work often reference those from the decorative arts, textiles and her suburban environment. All works begin as sketches, often with coloured pencil, which allow her to quickly create interconnected forms from random geometric shapes which are then overlayed with various combinations of repetitive patterns and colour.

The sculptures are hand-cut from pine timber using electric and hand saws. With each containing numerous parts the process of assembling the works in part references the sketches with an element of improvisation. The sculptures are then painted with bright colours and repetitive patterns to create dynamic forms set against the backdrop of the lush Hazelhurst Gardens.

Many things to many was part of Art Month Sydney 2022.
