Covering three decades, the survey spotlighted the artist’s unique contribution to the narrative of Australian Conceptualism and revealed his wide-ranging, interdisciplinary practice which merges painting, performance, installation and collaborative works and actions. Ruark Lewis has, over the past thirty years, achieved an important standing as an artist who works with language and space in social contexts. His art of cultural translation has consistently explored intersections between experimentation and a regionally tuned avant-garde culture that reaches a genuinely broad audience.
Working singularly and collaboratively Lewis has created artworks across a range of creative fields including drawing, architectural sculpture, writing, ethnography, public artworks and performance. He often works with other poets, experimental and radiophonic composers, choreographers, anthropologists, language & visual artists and writers.
