Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award 2023

With awards totalling $26,000 the biennial Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award showcases outstanding art created with, on or about paper. Awards include the:

• Major award | $15,000
• Young and Early Career Artist Award | $5,000
• Friends of Hazelhurst Local Artist Award | $5,000
• $1,000 People's Choice Award | $1,000
• The Preparators Residency Award | a 4-week studio residency chosen by Hazelhurst's installation crew

In 2023 Hazelhurst received entries from 890 artists from across Australia, and from these a selection panel chose 82 finalists. The exhibition presented a diverse range of works including drawing, printmaking, collage, photography, sculpture, paper cuts and video.

Leading Australian artist Deborah Kelly judged the Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award 2023 and said of the winning works:

"My criteria was I wanted works that thought about paper itself as a medium, that didn't just use it as a vehicle, that really engaged with the material, the stuff of paper, and thought about its weight in culture and its use. The three works that I chose were so outstanding, I thought, to their attention to this stuff, the weight of this stuff in culture and in history."
