Commissioned by Hazelhurst and developed during a four month residency at the Gallery, the installation recreated the Last Supper dining table as a nine-meter-long banquet sculpted entirely from salt.
Following their prominent 2011 work Still Life: the food bowl, this work addressed concerns arising from increasing salinity levels and environmental toxins, and the impact this has on food production and food safety.
"Here salt is a metaphor for the death of the land, sacrificed in the production and consumption of what has become The Last Supper", said the artists.
Both born in Tokyo Japan, Ken and Julia have been collaborating on projects since 2009 and have exhibited nationally and internationally, including the Singapore Biennale in 2013, the Venice Biennale in 2009, and in the United Kingdom, Finland and Germany in 2011-2012.
