Gut Feelings is a community project that brings together science and art to explore the connection between the gut, the brain and the trillions of microbes within us that make up our gut microbiome. This project aims to raise awareness of the importance of gut health to mental health and well-being, and to promote community connection. Hand stitched donated items were combined to create soft sculptural installations transforming complex internal systems into approachable, playful, and evocative artworks.Knitting and fibre arts offer a familiar, accessible language through which people can engage with science and feel a part of something larger.

By collaborating with researchers and scientists, we promote important health messages in a non-clinical, creative environment. Our workshops invite participants to build a collective body of work that is both scientifically grounded and deeply human. In doing so, we create space for shared artmaking, informal learning, and emotional connection, with one another, and with our own bodies.

This exhibition reframes craft as both art and outreach: an invitation to slow down and discover new connections between gut, brain, and community. This project is an Inspiring Australia initiative is supported by the Australian Government as part of National Science Week.
