A Brooklyn stripper impulsively marries the son of a Russian oligarch, and their fairy tale is threatened when his family arrives to annul the marriage.
Mikey Madison plays a sex worker who dances at a strip club and meets and marries - on impulse - the son of a Russian oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, the fairytale is shattered as his parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled.
Playing with genre expectations Director Sean Baker seems to anticipate and avoid conventions about on-screen violence, while examining social power imbalances. Like Baker's previous film The Florida Project, Anora was low budget and ultra independently made.
The film won five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Mikey Madison, and Best Director for Sean Baker.
