A Sámi girl is exposed to the racism of the 1930s at her Swedish boarding school, and starts dreaming of another life. However to achieve it, she must break all ties with her family and her Sami traditional culture.
A moving, coming-of-age film set against the social prejudices of 1930s Sweden. This handsome debut feature from Swedish-Sami writer-director Amanda Kernell blends adolescent fears that resonate across borders and generations with a little-known cultural context: Sweden’s colonial oppression of the indigenous Sami people. Following a single, strong-willed teenage girl who is forced to choose between staying with her people or pursuing the education and opportunities denied her. This stirring but pleasingly unsentimental tale was a festival crowd pleaser when it was released in 2016 and introduced a new young talent in the lead actor, Lene Cecilia Sparrok.
