Event details
In this French drama a novelist attends the trial of a woman accused of killing her 15-month-old daughter by abandoning on a beach in northern France. But as the trial continues, her own family history, doubts, and fears about motherhood are steadily dislodged as the life story of the accused is gradually revealed.
Rama, a Paris-based literature professor and writer, journeys to Saint-Omer to observe the trial of Laurence Coly, a Senegalese immigrant accused of abandoning her toddler on a beach in Berck. As Rama, who is also pregnant and navigating her own complex racial and familial dynamics, delves into Coly's story, she finds herself drawn to the parallels between their lives. Inspired by the Greek myth of Medea, Rama contemplates crafting a modern retelling while grappling with her own anxieties surrounding motherhood and identity.
