In modern-day Helsinki, two lonely souls in search of love meet by chance in a karaoke bar. However, their path to happiness is beset by obstacles - from lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses, alcoholism, and a charming stray dog.
Fallen Leaves (2023) is a Finnish romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Aki Kaurismäki. The film follows the developing relationship between Ansa, a single woman in Helsinki, and Holappa, an equally lonely man. After a chance meeting in a Karaoke bar miscommunication and personal struggles lead to a series of hardships as they try to find each other again.
The film premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d'Or and won the Jury Prize. It was also chosen as the Finnish entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards and was one of the 15 finalists on the shortlist.
